Particularly when taken at high doses, OM3FA supplements may interact with other medications. Fish oil has a recognized albeit less potent antiplatelet effect than aspirin and may prolong clotting times in patients who are also taking heparin. Bleeding risk is unlikely affected by doses in the range of 3-6 g/d. The US Food and Drug Administration–approved package inserts for OM3FA pharmaceuticals suggest that patients who take OM3FA supplements with anticoagulants should be monitored for coagulation status and clinically significant bleeding episodes, even though those episodes are not well documented.
