HCM is the most common inherited heart disease, affecting approximately 1 in 200-500 individuals, although many cases go undiagnosed. It is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner; each child of an individual with HCM will have a 50% chance of inheriting the disease. Although HCM is slightly more common in men, women are at great risk for mortality from heart failure.

Among patients diagnosed with HCM, approximately one third are diagnosed with nonobstructive HCM; two thirds are diagnosed with obstructive HCM.
