Valerian is commonly used by patients looking for help with insomnia, anxiety, or depression. Because of its sedative effects, use with other drugs that cause drowsiness is a possible concern. Valerian may have serious interactions with benzodiazepines, such as alprazolam, as well as other sedative medications, such as pentobarbital, phenobarbital, secobarbital, thiopental, fentanyl, morphine, and propofol. Alcohol use is also a concern in patients taking valerian.
