A 51-year-old Latina woman living in the United States, post-menopausal, self-palpated a lump in the upper right quadrant of her right breast, measuring approximately 3 cm. After careful clinical examination, she was referred by her obstetrician/gynecologist to a radiology center for further evaluation. The patient stated that there was no history of breast cancer in any close family members. About 18 months ago, she was prescribed a standard conjugated estrogen preparation (0.625 mg/d) because of severe hot flashes. After 8 months, her dosage was reduced incrementally until the regimen was discontinued. The hot flashes returned but with lesser severity and frequency.
Except for mild hypertension and occasional flare-ups of carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms, the patient is generally in good health.
