Resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics is an alarming phenomenon and a public health challenge. Antimicrobial resistance in S pneumoniae for penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics is due to alterations in penicillin-binding proteins, leading to a decreased affinity between penicillin-binding protein and the beta-lactam drugs.
