As noted by Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines, overuse of SABAs, defined as more than one canister of salbutamol or the equivalent monthly, is associated with diminished asthma control and an increased risk for asthma-related death. Other factors associated with increased mortality risk in severe asthma include the current use of oral corticosteroids, the absence of inhaled corticosteroid use, and poor adherence with asthma maintenance medication.
