In most patients who are diagnosed with prostate cancer, DRE results are normal and PSA results are abnormal. In general, most cases of prostate cancer are found because of abnormalities in a screening PSA level or DRE findings when patients are still asymptomatic.

Among patients with prostate cancer, 31% have the cancer detected on repeat biopsy. In patients whose PSA level is still elevated despite negative biopsy results, the literature supports performing one or more future biopsies.
