Omega-3 fatty acids are known to play a role in the cardiovascular, pulmonary, immune, and endocrine systems. The three most studied types are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Omega-3 fatty acids have been suggested to help lower blood pressure; reduce triglycerides; slow the development of plaque in the arteries; and reduce the risk for arrhythmia, heart attack, and stroke.
