Hyperkalemia is a clinically important acute electrolyte abnormality that can result in significant morbidity and life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. Although uncommon in the general population, hyperkalemia is much more prevalent in patients with predisposing conditions such as chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and heart failure. For example, among kidney transplant recipients maintained on calcineurin inhibitors, the reported incidence of hyperkalemia is around 44%. Acute hyperkalemia is a medical emergency requiring prompt intervention to stabilize potassium levels. Various therapeutic approaches are available for the management of both acute and chronic hyperkalemia.
