Risk factors for eczema herpeticum include Asian descent, being a young school-aged child, and having atopic dermatitis. The patient will be contagious until the lesions crust over. Treatment should include systemic herpes simplex virus medication (eg, acyclovir), management of the underlying atopic dermatitis flare, and gentle cleansing and petroleum-based moisturizer use.
