Much evidence points to the inferiority of medical management to laparoscopic fundoplication, including the fact that PPIs fail to eliminate bile reflux, thought to be an important contributor to the development of Barrett esophagus. However, prospective randomized controlled trials comparing the approaches head-to-head have not been performed.

For patients who undergo fundoplication for Barrett esophagus, periodic monitoring with endoscopy is recommended.

Fundoplication, including via a laparoscopic approach, is performed under general anesthesia. The typical hospital stay is 2 days.
