According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, binge drinking is the most common, costly, and deadly pattern of excessive alcohol use. The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) defines binge drinking as a pattern that brings the blood alcohol concentration to 0.08% (0.08 g/dL of alcohol) or higher.
SAMHSA, which conducts the annual National Survey on Drug Use and Health, defines binge drinking as five or more alcoholic drinks for men or four or more alcoholic drinks for women on the same occasion (ie, at the same time or within a couple of hours of each other) on at least 1 day in the past month.
The NIAAA defines heavy alcohol use as more than four drinks on any day for men or more than three drinks for women. SAMHSA defines heavy alcohol use as binge drinking on five or more days in the past month.
