Critically, in patients with diabetes and heart failure, medications used to treat one condition can affect the outcomes of the other condition. Glucose-lowering medications used to treat hyperglycemia in diabetes can lead to development and progression of heart failure, increasing the risk for poor outcomes, including hospitalization. In light of these data, identifying a therapeutic regimen with synergistic results is the primary goal of comanaging these conditions.
