One of the goals of type 2 diabetes treatment is to reduce the risk for microvascular complications, such as eye, nerve, and kidney diseases, through glycemic and blood pressure control. Other goals are to reduce the risk for macrovascular complications, such as coronary, cerebrovascular, and peripheral vascular disease, through control of lipids and blood pressure, as well as through smoking cessation; and to reduce the risk for metabolic and neurologic complications through glycemic control.
