Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an increasingly prevalent global public health problem. Estimates suggest that up to 13% of the worldwide population is affected by CKD, with the majority of patients in stage 3 disease. CKD is associated with increased healthcare expenditure and is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and other serious complications. Regardless of stage, CKD is associated with increased risks for cardiovascular morbidity, premature mortality, and decreased quality of life. Hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and primary renal disorders can all accelerate the decline in renal function.
