The management of diabetic nephropathy is multifaceted and requires regular outpatient follow-up. Screening and treatment for other complications associated with diabetes, such as retinopathy, diabetic foot, and cardiovascular disease, is essential to optimize outcomes. Regular annual urinalysis to screen for microalbuminuria is recommended. Intensive therapy can stabilize or even reverse microalbuminuria; additionally, it can partially, but not fully, reverse glomerular hypertrophy and hyperfiltration.
