Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency is characterized by a deficiency of exocrine pancreatic enzymes leading to maldigestion and malabsorption. Patients with this disorder often experience a reduction in quality of life and are at risk for potentially life-threating complications. Its clinical manifestations often overlap with those of other gastrointestinal conditions, which can hinder timely recognition and diagnostic testing. Although the overall prevalence of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency is unknown, it occurs quite frequently among certain populations, such as those with cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, or pancreatic cancer. Recognition of high-risk patients is crucial for diagnosis.
