The presence of jaundice, hepatomegaly, abdominal pain, serum ceruloplasmin deficiency due to an abnormal copper transporter gene, or Kayser-Fleischer rings in the cornea should trigger additional evaluation to exclude Wilson disease. A slit-lamp examination may be the best modality for observing Kayser-Fleischer rings. Referral for an ophthalmologic consultation is mandatory for patients in whom Wilson disease is suspected.
