According to guidelines from the AAD, routine microbiologic testing is not recommended in the evaluation and management of patients with acne. However, patients who have acne-like lesions suggestive of gram-negative folliculitis may benefit from microbiologic testing, including culture of the lesions. Routine endocrinologic evaluation is also not recommended for most patients with acne. The diagnosis of acne vulgaris is clinical, but the presence of acne and additional signs of androgen excess should prompt further laboratory evaluation.
