According to the Global Initiative for Asthma guidelines, if severe asthma remains uncontrolled after treatment optimization, the next step is to identify the phenotype. Assessment tools recommended for this include blood and sputum eosinophils, measurement of serum IgE, skin-prick testing, and FeNO testing.
