Researchers have referred to the term mixed pain in the literature for more than 10 years, but it has never been formally defined. A group of international investigators recently reviewed the scientific evidence and developed a "consensus on several key aspects of the mixed pain concept, to serve as a foundation for future attempts at generating a mechanistic and/or clinical definition of mixed pain."
According to their consensus document, mixed pain involves substantial clinical overlap of nociceptive and neuropathic symptoms.
