Although pain assessment requires a multidimensional approach, one essential measurement is determining the anatomical etiology of pain, including location and distribution. Somatic nociceptive pain is described as localized pain relative to a musculoskeletal injury; it also encompasses syndromes like fibromyalgia and complex regional pain syndrome.

Neuropathic pain is typically confined to the sensory distribution of the affected nerve(s); it may also be more diffuse or present in a stocking-glove pattern, or it may migrate or radiate from the source of the pain to other areas of the body.
