Technetium-99m (99mTc) bone scanning is the gold standard for measuring biologic activity and detecting occult lesions. It is also an indirect method for measuring bone destruction. However, it is not useful in assessment of multiple myeloma. CT is the most sensitive method for measuring bone destruction, whereas MRI is the most sensitive method of assessment of the anatomic extent of lesions. Although angiography can be useful for preoperative embolization of vascular lesions, it has largely been overtaken by MRI.
