Genotyping for APOE alleles is a research tool that has been helpful in determining the risk for Alzheimer's disease in patient populations, but until recently it was of little, if any, value in making a clinical diagnosis and developing a management plan in individual patients. The APOE genotypes with highest risks for Alzheimer's disease were ε43 and ε44, whereas those with the lowest risks were ε22, ε32, ε42, and ε33.
The CFTR gene is associated with cystic fibrosis. The BRCA1 gene is associated with increased risk for breast and ovarian cancer.
The PARK7 gene (also known as DJ-1) is associated with early-onset Parkinson's disease.
