Various mental disorders are associated with impairments or alterations in memory. Depression has long had a connection to memory problems. Older adults with more significant depressive symptoms have more memory problems, more markers of brain aging, and increased vascular brain lesions. Anxiety and related disorders are also strongly associated with memory loss and impairment.

Narcissistic personality disorder and kleptomania are not as routinely associated with memory issues. Although fear of memory loss may be an obsessive concern in individuals with health illness anxiety disorder, memory dysfunction is not a routine component of the condition.
