Follow-up of three large studies of diabetes prevention with lifestyle intervention, which included weight control, showed sustained reductions in the rate of conversion to type 2 diabetes:
The Da Qing Diabetes Prevention Outcome Study showed a 43% reduction at 20 years
The Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study showed a 43% reduction at 7 years
The US Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study showed a 34% reduction at 10 years, and a 27% reduction at 15 years
In the short term, for adults who are overweight or obese with IGT, the incidence of conversion to type 2 diabetes was decreased by a significant 58% over 3 years.
In a Swedish study of individuals aged 60 and older with 12 years of follow-up, it was found that weight loss strongly increased the likelihood of reverting from prediabetes to normoglycemia. Physical activity also reduced the mortality rate related to prediabetes.
