In prediabetes, which is on the rise, blood glucose levels are above the upper threshold considered to be normal but below the threshold for a diagnosis of diabetes. The diagnosis of prediabetes is important because it represents an opportunity to prevent a serious disease—diabetes—from occurring.
More than 300 million people worldwide are estimated to have prediabetes, and this number is projected to rise to 587 million or 8.3% of adults.
