In men with bone metastases, approximately 80% of the tumors are from primary prostate and lung cancers. Likewise, in women with bone metastases, approximately 80% of the tumors are from primary breast and lung cancers. The remaining 20% of bone metastases in both men and women are from primary cancers of the kidney, gut, thyroid, and sites of unknown origin.
Whereas kidney, gut, thyroid, and sites of unknown origin represent 20% of MBD cases in both men and women, brain cancer is not a primary source of MBD. Metastatic liver cancer is rare in both men and women.
