Multiple sclerosis (MS), an immune-mediated inflammatory disease, attacks myelinated axons in the central nervous system. In people with MS, rates and degrees of disability vary widely and are related to the location and amount of axonal damage, seen as lesions on MRI. Treatment aims to reduce relapses, lesions seen on MRI, symptoms, and progression of disability. If left untreated, more than 30% of patients with MS develop significant physical disability within 20-25 years after onset. Treatment has two main aspects: immunomodulatory therapy (IMT) for the underlying immune disorder, and therapies to relieve or modify symptoms. IMT is directed toward reducing the frequency of relapses and slowing progression.
