A meta-analysis revealed that probiotics have a clinical impact on patients with hepatic encephalopathy. Probiotic use was associated with improvements in management and decreased hospitalization rates; however, no impact on overall mortality rates was conclusively demonstrated.

Thus far, no definitive positive correlations have conclusively linked probiotic use and treatment of most hepatic conditions, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, Dubin-Johnson syndrome, Budd-Chiari syndrome, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.
