Although decorating for the holidays can be fun, injuries sustained while putting up or taking down festive displays are common. In the United States alone, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, around 15,000 injuries related to holiday decorating are seen in emergency departments from November to December; this works out to around 250 injuries a day during the season. Although many are not life-threatening, some of them can be serious.
The most common injuries are caused by falls (often from a ladder), lacerations from broken ornaments or glass decorations, and back strain from lifting or hauling. Safety tips and proper practices may help individuals avoid harm, but healthcare professionals must be prepared to confront various conditions.
