Clinical Trend of the Week (December 30 – January 5): Giapreza
Approval of a new drug by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is once again responsible for the top search term of the week. In late December, the FDA approved angiotensin II injection for intravenous infusion (Giapreza) in adult patients in septic or other distributive shock. In a clinical trial, the injection was associated with increased blood pressure when combined with conventional treatments. However, the drug is associated with arterial and deep venous thrombosis, necessitating the use of prophylactic treatment for blood clots. Giapreza’s approval and ongoing controversy surrounding proposed guidelines have kept sepsis in the spotlight, where it is likely to remain for some time.
