Clinical Trend of the Week (July 29 – August 4): Probiotics

The ever-evolving role of gut microbiota resulted in this week's top search term. An increasing number of studies are examining ways in which probiotics may impact weight loss and obesity. Although the information thus far is inconsistent, studies continue to explore how alterations in the gut flora using probiotics may affect weight gain and weight loss. Whether probiotics can be used to change microbiota in order to allow weight changes remains unclear, but ongoing studies will continue to receive substantial attention. Also of note, the potential for probiotics to be used as part of treatment for depressive symptoms is emerging. Again, although the evidence thus far is not conclusive, the possibility of affecting the "gut-brain axis" using probiotics warrants further investigation.
