HIV remains one of the most pressing public health issues around the world. Globally in 2019, 38 million individuals were living with HIV/AIDS, including nearly 27 million people in Eastern and Southern Africa, 4.9 million people in Western and Central Africa, 5.8 million people in Asia and the Pacific, and 2.2 million people in Western and Eastern Europe and North America. Also in 2019, estimates suggest that 1.7 million individuals worldwide acquired HIV. Better access to testing and evolving treatment options have improved outcomes and quality of life for many individuals with HIV.
