A large US-based study showed that, in those with a normal weight, the prevalence of diabetes was highest in Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders (18%), followed by 13% in Hispanics, 10.1% in Asians and American Indians/Alaskan Natives, and 5% in Whites.

While a subset of patients may present with lean diabetes, being underweight with fluctuating serum glucose levels is not a risk factor for developing type 2 DM.
