Type 2 diabetes mellitus (type 2 DM) is chronic hyperglycemia resulting from insulin resistance and inadequate insulin secretion, combined with excessive or inappropriate glucagon secretion. Although type 2 DM is most prevalent in the United States and Western nations, its rates are increasing worldwide, primarily due to the adoption of Western lifestyles and subsequent increasing rates of obesity.
Estimates from the International Diabetes Federation suggest that approximately 537 million adults are living with diabetes, which will claim 6.7 million lives in 2021; by 2045, this number is expected to rise to 700 million. Type 2 DM is often a contributing cause of death and leads to cardiovascular, renal, neuropathic, and retinal disease. Despite the prevalence and high rates of morbidity and mortality associated with diabetes, many patients are initially asymptomatic and their disease is undiagnosed for years. Astute clinicians promote screening and early treatment, thereby improving outcomes.
